It has been known for decades that H. sapiens and H. neanderthalensis lived side-by-side after the moderns arrived, in caves around Mt. Carmel in present day Israel and other locations. It has long been speculated that the two groups exchanged more than pleasantries. From fossil skulls to tool technologies, the history of the hominids is written in stone. The Hominid Fossil Repository serves as a guide to identifying fossil hominid specimens and the tools used by some of our earliest ancestors.

In 1864, it became the first fossil hominin species to be named. Geologist William King suggested the name Homo neanderthalensis (Johanson and Edgar, 2006), after these fossils found in the Feldhofer Cave of the Neander Valley in Germany (tal —a modern form of thal —means “valley” in German). The word neanderthalensis is based on the location where the first major specimen was discovered in 1856 – the Neander Valley in Germany. The German word for valley is ‘Tal’ although in the 1800s it was spelt ‘Thal’. Homo neanderthalensis therefore means ‘Human from the Neander Valley’.
